An Angel. A Witch. A Demon. And A Choice.
Creatures from outer realms suck, as any gatekeeper worth their salt will tell you. Welcome to Rogan’s life, an orphaned seventeen-year-old who lives and trains with other misfits under her uncle’s roof, keeping Earth safe from non-human realm jumpers. Rogan’s biggest issue concerns her uncle’s short leash with her freedom—that is of course, until she’s taken by a notorious witch, and her life begins to unravel. Soon, the supernatural beauty discovers there’s a reason her uncle kept such a tight lock on her whereabouts, and that she has more than angel blood running through her veins.
Eighteen-year-old Max is an angel, and Rogan’s mentor and guardian. He’s well aware of her tenacious inability to obey orders, though he also knows she’s a fierce fighter. When he’s involved in a scheme that ultimately gets Rogan kidnapped, he must battle his way back to her in an attempt to save her from the darkness threatening to possess her.
Review ★★★★☆
I was intrigued by Wings of Flesh and Bones from the moment I first laid eyes on its title. Is that not one of the most intriguing titles you've ever read? Once I read the synopsis, I was sold. Who can say no to a YA release that seemingly captures two thrilling genres in one: fantasy and paranormal. You can only imagine how stoked I was to see I'd made the cut for the blog tour.
When I got the confirmation and the galley, you better believe I pounced on Wings of Flesh and Bones almost instantly. And it was every bit fantastical as I'd hoped.
Constantine has a tone to her that feels very compelling. She mixes up the magical elements with the more mundane notions of life--coming of age, love, family, etc. Wings of Flesh and Bones isn't just one thing and that's what makes it so pleasant. It doesn't hurt that you genuinely grow to care for the characters and their world. Rogan and Max are two very distinct characters that come to life before our eyes; their connection is captivating and complicated, aka everything needed to keep the story moving.
While the theme of romance is prominent in Wings of Flesh and Bones, it doesn't overwhelm the senses. It feels both like a romance novel and a fantasy novel; exactly as mixed genres should feel. Everything about it is thrilling and mysterious, sweet and a little dark.
I did not want to put it down and devoured it quite quickly because there's just something about the pace, the way everything unfolds, that really keeps you glued to its pages. Constantine is an author to look out for--I can't wait to see what other magical lands, and stories, she creates in the years to come.
Wings of Flesh and Bones is can't-miss-YA and perfect for fans of any of the genres mentioned above. It is versatile and very, very fun.
A definite must-read for any reader this summer and beyond.
