In a world on the brink of war, four superpowered teens must learn to work together for peace in Caitlin Lochner’s action-packed debut novel, A Soldier and A Liar.
Lai Cathwell is good at keeping secrets. As a Nyte, a supernaturally gifted teenager who is feared and shunned by the ungifted, this skill is essential to survival. Orchestrating her own imprisonment to escape military duty has only honed her ability to deceive others. But when rebels start attacking the city, Lai is dragged back into the fight with a new team of Nytes.
Thrown together with Jay, a self-conscious perfectionist consumed by the desire to be accepted; Al, a short-tempered fighter lying for the sake of revenge; and Erik, an amnesiac hell-bent on finding his memories and his place in the world, Lai realizes she’s facing an entirely different kind of challenge–one that might just be impossible. But if this team can’t learn to work together, the entire sector will be plunged into war.
The Review
A Soldier and a Liar by Caitlin Lochner
Rating: ★★★★☆(4.5 stars)
Based on the synopsis alone, I was BEYOND stoked to read A Soldier and a Liar. I have a soft spot for dystopian novels that involve *superpowers* and the promise of suspense. Although the premise is definitely different, and full of differing thrills and powers, I think fans of the Shatter Me and The Darkest Minds series will salivate for A Soldier and a Liar. If you loved those books like me, you're going to enjoy this one.
Utterly imaginative and vivid. There is something about this world and the characters within it that will keep you in place whilst reading A Soldier and a Liar. So much about this novel is compulsively readable and so, so, SO good.
(How many times can I say "so" without waving a pom pom?)
That being said, there are so many stellar qualities to A Soldier and a Liar. They cannot be listed right off the bat because it may tip you off to where the story takes you, so I will say this: WOW. Lochner is a pro at crafting a world that is full of heart thudding moments that make you question one or two things. Mostly? What happens next? If ever there were a book to fit the definition of page-turner, A Soldier and a Liar is it.
In my years as a reader, I've come across many phenomenal debut novels but this one just might take the cake. Every inch of it was crafted thoughtfully and with care (if care is a shiver down your spine in anticipation or excitement) and it makes one thing known: Caitlin Lochner is here to stay.
One thing readers might be thinking, or fearing, in reading the synopsis for A Soldier and a Liar is that we've already seen so many variations of a similar story. If you're looking on the outside looking in with this novel, you'd be right... if A Soldier and a Liar didn't totally revitalize and turn the genre on its head.
This is one novel you can't miss this year.
Author Bio:
(Um, so, wow bios are hard.) I studied creative writing at the University of South Florida and used my BA in words to become an English teaching assistant in Tokyo. I’m in love with storytelling of any kind, but especially in the form of books, manga, and video games. If you ever want to talk nerdy, I am VERY down.
