Top Ten Tuesday: The Ten Most Recent Additions to My To-Read List (#27)

11:01 PM

Hi, my name is Jessica and I have a nasty habit of adding WAY TOO MANY BOOKS to my TBR.
*everyone* HI, JESSICA.

Is anyone else SUPER OVERWHELMED by how many *potentially* fantastic books are coming out this year? Yes, I definitely said this last year. And the year before. And probably the year before. BUT, this year it's like ????? I blinked and thirty-five releases were announced for one day and IT'S A LOT.

On one hand, my wallet is weeping and doing its own rendition of While My Guitar Gently Weeps, and it's very stressful, and I am going to need more shelves, but on the other hand... YES. Sign me up. Give me all the books. Grabby hands are on high. I need them all.

The good news is, I'm only human, so I probably will only get to a quarter of the books that I want to in 2019. I'll give you a minute to contain your shock at this because I'm sure you guys were over there thinking I was part alien, part ogre, and it's a terrible shock. Are you sitting down? Do you need a glass of water? A snack?

Anyways. Here are the TEN most recent additions to my TBR pile. Er, the ones that are coming out in 2019. Did I mention that? Probably not. I'm very tired, as per usual, so my brain is doing that thing where it's, like, going all in with some jumping jacks and then proceeding to clock out for the day immediately afterwards.

Even worse, she can't stop worrying about her stepsister Sarah, left behind with her father. To do so, she has bound the wicked king, Cardan, to her, and made herself the power behind the throne. COLOR ME IN by Natasha Diaz

Who is Nevaeh Levitz?

Growing up in an affluent suburb of New York City, sixteen-year-old Nevaeh Levitz never thought much about her biracial roots. When her Black mom and Jewish dad split up, she relocates to her mom's family home in Harlem and is forced to confront her identity for the first time.

Nevaeh wants to get to know her extended family, but one of her cousins can't stand that Nevaeh, who inadvertently passes as white, is too privileged, pampered, and selfish to relate to the injustices they face on a daily basis as African Americans. In the midst of attempting to blend their families, Nevaeh's dad decides that she should have a belated bat mitzvah instead of a sweet sixteen, which guarantees social humiliation at her posh private school. Even with the push and pull of her two cultures, Nevaeh does what she's always done when life gets complicated: she stays silent.

It's only when Nevaeh stumbles upon a secret from her mom's past, finds herself falling in love, and sees firsthand the prejudice her family faces that she begins to realize she has a voice. And she has choices. Will she continue to let circumstances dictate her path? Or will she find power in herself and decide once and for all who and where she is meant to be?
