Years ago, Elle—never call her Cinderella—escaped her evil step family in order to build a new life for herself in Manhattan. Today, Elle’s awful past is a distant memory. In fact, Elle even attends West Lake Prep, an exclusive high school where regular humans mix with members of the Magicorum, such as fairies, shifters and witches. Although she still must live in hiding from her evil stepfamily, Elle has always found ways to get whatever her heart desires.
That is, until Alec Le Charme.
Alec is the heir to the Le Charme dynasty of high-end jewelers. He’s also kind, charismatic, has a knee-melting smile. Elle has fallen for him, hard. Unfortunately, thanks to Elle’s evil step family, Alec is absolutely off limits. In fact, if Elle and Alec so much as kiss, it will start a magical chain reaction that would end in powerful factions of witches and wizards going to war. As a result, Elle and Alec vow to stay friends, no matter what. Then West Lake Prep holds a masquerade ball. Identities get mixed up and forbidden kisses are finally shared.
Time for the Magicorum to go to war, and for Elle to confront her hidden past in ways she never thought possible.

Rating: ★★★★☆

As always, a copy of this book was provided by the publisher or author in exchange for my honest review. This does not effect my opinion in any way.

This was my introduction to Christina Bauer's Fairy Tales of Magicorum series and I am so glad it was. For those of you who are new to the series, Bauer takes readers on an epic journey and weaves classic stories into something fresh and new--each book is part of a series, but can be read as a standalone.

Slippers and Thieves, of course, sets the stage for a new kind of Cinderella story. Told in a duel POV, we follow Elle and Alec and really get to know them. Like all good retellings, this one is imaginative and turns into something that is both familiar and enthralling. Bauer crafts the characters beautifully, taking the time to really develop the cast and its settings and plotlines.

Under the familiar story arches and elements (we all know the classic tale--and so does this story) is something vivid and unique and completely its own. Something about Slippers and Thieves felt brand new and all-consuming. I loved how imaginative it was and how it became something unexpected to me, personally. This was Cinderella as you've never seen her--and what a blast it was!

While retellings can be a tricky task, Bauer assures readers within only a few pages that she is more than ready. Slippers and Thieves is impossible to put down, wholesome and romantic, action-packed and thoroughly fun to read. I found myself breezing through it in a way that doesn't come around often in retellings.

I am definitely picking up the other books in this series!

Author Bio:
Christina Bauer thinks that fantasy books are like bacon: they just make life better. All of which is why she writes romance novels that feature demons, dragons, wizards, witches, elves, elementals, and a bunch of random stuff that she brainstorms while riding the Boston T. Oh, and she includes lots of humor and kick-ass chicks, too.
Christina graduated from Syracuse University’s Newhouse School with BA’s in English along with Television, Radio, and Film Production. She lives in Newton, MA with her husband, son, and semi-insane golden retriever, Ruby.
